About
In its post-war heyday, the Barlow Cabin—on the route of the historic Barlow Road in Government Camp—hosted everyone from Scandinavian royalty to the world’s top ski racers. Movie star Rock Hudson stopped in for a drink during the filming of Bend in the River (1952). The cabin was built in 1946 by Timberline Lodge’s first publicist, George Henderson, as a compact, convivial base camp and gathering place for skiers and climbers and, eventually, his own children and grandchildren. Now it's your turn to immerse yourself in Mt Hood history!
This rustic cabin offers Pendleton blankets, down comforters, a cozy wood-burning fireplace, a furnace and now air conditioning! There is also a smart TV with Hulu and wifi to stream. You can also hook up your iPod / iPhone to the stereo to play your choice of music. The Crosstown Trail, with its links to the Westleg Road and Glade and Alpine ski trails, is a short walk / ski away. Walk to dinner in Government Camp or stay in to cook in the small but well-equipped kitchen. On the walls are photos and memorabilia from the 1930s and ’40s depicting Government Camp’s emergence as a recreation destination. While you are visiting, be sure to page through George’s own Mount Hood memoir; Lonely On The Mountain.
The living room, kitchen, small bathroom with shower, and kids’ bedroom (bunk beds) are downstairs. Upstairs are three small bedrooms and a half-bath. One upstairs bedroom has twin beds, one has a queen bed, and the third bedroom has one queen bed and one twin. Capacity is limited to parties of eight or fewer.
Please note that the Barlow Cabin is not wheelchair accessible.

Wonderful time with snow falling all around. Beautiful walks and very festive. We appreciate that the roads and driveway are plowed making our exit pretty easy!

Rustic home with historic ties to timberline, and skiing in the area. Everything we needed for a great weekend.
Everyone was easy to deal with and very helpful!
Several restaurants within easy walk and decent grocery store.
Perfect central location for Timberline lodge, Trillium lake, Timothy lake and dozens of trails

Barlow Cabin stay
Danna H., Redding, Ca United States
We had a wonderful experience at the Barlow Cabin. We went there for a wedding on the mountain at Ski Bowl. It was wonderful and cold. How fun to come back to a cozy house with a fire and charm galore. We would definitely come back again. We love the history of the cabin! It was also well-stocked for cooking meals and very clean. Thank you for a great stay!

Great house in great location
Recent Guest, Portland, OR United States
Barlow Cabin is cozy and quaint. We loved the historic feel. Plenty of space for our group of two couples and two kids. It had everything we needed for a fun ski weekend. A few notes: Lots of bedrooms, but there's just one shower, and if you're planning to cook gourmet meals, you may want to look elsewhere. The kitchen is surprisingly functional for its size, but lacks a fan over the stove (and there's no dishwasher). Also, no dishsoap was provided. Some of the outlets didn't work, along with the ceiling light in one upstairs bedroom (luckily we didn't need to use that room). I wish they had a door code so we didn't have to pick up the key in Welches, as some in our party were coming from Hood River. Overall, though, what it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in charm. We will be back!

Snow Time!
kimberly W., Portland, OR United States
Lovely time as a historic cabin with all of the charm of Mt Hood. We listened to Christmas music, took walks, made a snowman, and enjoyed evening fires while the snow fell.

great location for a rustic stay
Liz S., Portland, OR US
This is a sweet cabin with four bedrooms. It is VERY rustic. We had a problem with the wood burning stove--which let a ton of smoke into the house (and we moved flu, etc). This is a great place for skiers or snow shoeing to take off from.
Manager's Response
Hello Liz, thank you for the review! We did put some more clear instructions for fireplace usage at this home, we apologize for the problem. This home was built post-war and is an older historical home in Government Camp. Next time you book with us let us know you are a repeat customer and receive a valuable customer discount!

We all had a fantastic time up at the Barlow Cabin. We had plenty of room and we were all very comfortable. The location was perfect for us to settle in and take a very short walk into town. Would highly recommend and stay here again. Thank you so much!

Summer stay. Great little vintage cabin. Comforting touches of vintage decor and history.
Equipped for a nice stay and easy walk to a store and restaurants.
Well maintained with subtle updates. Nice property to walk with the mornings first cup of coffee.
The driveway and parking can be tricky for multiple vehicles, no on-street parking.
Funky Retro Cabin on Mt Hood
Jonah S., Beaverton, OR United States
This cabin is a bit outdated, but the retro vibe was actually really fun. We loved it. Loads of space around the cabin for the kids to just build sled courses and play in the snow (which was their favorite part).

We had a great time at the Barlow Cabin. Perfect location for hiking or in the winter skiing. We will totally be back. Well equipped, not a ton of storage in bedrooms but not a biggy.

Great experience for me and my family. The cabin is exactly what we expected and our week there was excellent. Comfortable, great location.
Govy Cabin!
Andree K., Oak Grove, OR United States
We had a really good time and loved the cabin. While we were there we found an article in the ski journal that had been written by my father in law, Harold Laman...that was pretty cool!!!
Great location / Classic get away cabin
William G., Dublin, OH United States
We enjoyed our stay and the Barlow cabin. It is in a prime location to enjoy the area surrounding Mt Hood. It is as advertised and comfortable. That being said the property is older and has few amenities and a renter should be prepared for that. we used it as a place to rest after being outside hiking and sightseeing and not as a 24/7 hangout. The management company was fantastic and attentive to our needs, personable, and pleasant to deal with.

Very pleasant, the rental staff was extremely helpful.
Cozy Cabin
Karen C., Sherwood, OR United States
This is a rustic, cozy cabin! We enjoyed our stay here, with our boys. It had everything we needed, and was very clean. This is the perfect location for a snowboarding family: It's just a quick drive to Meadows and Timberline, and Ski Bowl is - quite literally - across the street.
Wonderful Weekend Away!
Rebecca C., Poulsbo, WA US
We really enjoyed our time in Barlow Cabin and Government Camp! The cabin was nicely stocked. Loved the character and charm of the cabin. We also enjoyed being able to walk into town and to the tubing/skiing areas.
The only thing we wished we had were more outlets in the kitchen... With the fridge and freezer plugged in we only had 2 outlets for the coffee maker, grinder, microwave and toaster oven.
The cabin was clean, love the down comforters, the fireplace is a charmer and the entry room was great for stowing our cooler boxes and drinks! Would easily stay here again!

Our stay at the Barlow Cabin was perfect. It's such a cozy cabin with so much history. And what an amazing location! We were able to walk to all the great shops and restaurants downtown Govy has to offer. Our daughter loved playng in all the snow right in our backyard. We would definitely stay at this cabin again.

We had a lovely time at Barlow Cabin where history meets, snug warm days in front of the fire. A comfortable well appointed space full of charm was a perfect weekend getaway with family. The space was well planned and inviting.

If your looking for a cozy place to stay with a feeling of stepping back in time to 1948 pictures and art work on the walls. Great fireplace with a cozy coach to look out the windows into the snow.
