Marshall Cabin

Guest Rating:

Vacation rental cabin / bungalow. Sleeps 10, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. Dogs allowed.

Government Camp, OR 97028 United States

This beautiful cabin sits on the bank of a rushing stream on a large private lot. On one side it looks into a forest with old growth trees . On the other side, the view is of a sunny area with lodge pole pines and huckleberry bushes. It is in the Trillum Lake / Summit Meadow area, in a small settlement of homes, totally surrounded by national forest but close-in to Government Camp amenities. This is a place to enjoy peace and the natural world.

The location is a mecca for those who love cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and tranquility. In winter, there can be 12 compacted feet of snow on the ground burying the windows of two of the bedrooms in a sheet of white while the winter views from the main floor are spectacular.

In summer, sitting out on the covered porch, the sound of the stream is a joy hear. A quick walk takes you into Summit Meadow with its gorgeous flowers and one of the best views of Mt. Hood. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the out of doors. For those that want to paddle or fish, the boat launch at Trillum Lake can be reached in ten minutes. There are hiking trails and gravel roads offer mountain biking opportunities.

Winter access is limited to skis or snowshoes. Most guests park in the parking lot across from the Timberline lodge cut-off and come in along the groomed ski /snowshoe trail that starts there. The cabin is 1 ¼ miles down the trail. The beginning of the trail down is steep, so many guests will want to snowshoe in.

Summer access is by vehicle after the forest service is satisfied that the road is adequately cleared of snow. The road in is also closed prior to the first major snowstorm. So guests coming in during the months of November through May need to be prepared to get in without a vehicle, although some years it is possible to get in during November and May. If you can’t drive-in, you can access the cabin along a gorgeous trail through a deep, beautiful forest or walk down the peaceful closed road.

Once you reach the cabin, you will find a very comfortable home filled with beautifully finished wood and many interesting artifacts from the 100 some years that the Marshall family has enjoyed family-owned cabins in this area. This cabin, built in 1996, has a living room, kitchen and dining room that are open to each other, providing a nice venue for relaxing and enjoying a fire in the wood stove.

The kitchen is well equipped and has counter space for several cooks. It looks out over the stream.

The master bedroom, with a queen bed, has a lovely view out over the stream and its cathedral ceiling gives it an airy feeling.

The two downstairs bedrooms (queen in one and queen + twin in the other) have very large windows and views out over the stream, until snow builds up too high to see out.

The loft area (leave the door open to heat) is a great place for kids. It has a full bed , and two twins. The door to the loft area is locked off for smaller parties but will be opened up for 7 guests or more. It can also be available, on request, for parties of 4-6 who need it, but for small parties there will be an additional $30 cleaning fee, in addition to the any normal extra guest charge and cleaning fee, paid with your reservation.

While you may not want to use it given the sense of tranquility and peace this home offers, there is wifi, so you can stay connected if you want to. Please call us with questions you might have about this truly unique property.

Without prior discussion and agreement by the owners, this special property is limited to no more than 6 adults or 10 total guests including children.

Our stay was too short at this wonderful cabin in the woods! The location, the amenities and the weather all were fabulous! We enjoyed the creek running alongside the cabin; the birds, chipmunks and squirrels all vying for the birdseed; the evening fires and cooking over the fire; the hike to Trillium Lake; putting up the hammock and getting lost in a good book; the secluded nature; the drive to Timberline Lodge and the Park Ranger tour; and the extra glass of wine just to enjoy the evening longer outside before retiring to bed! Everything you need is here. Highly recommend.

4 of us stayed at the Marshall Cabin over the 4th of July. It's a beautiful house/cabin with tons of privacy, sitting above still creek. The kitchen is well equipped, the furniture and bed linens are nice, and every detail seems to have been thought of. There is a great notebook on the history of the area and the families involvement there along with types of birds and other wildlife that have been spotted. It's about 1.5 miles from Trillium lake which was great for kayaking and only a half mile on 26 from Government Camp. Truly a special place!

We really appreciated the stay at Marshall cabin. The location has privacy, unlike many of the cabin rentals in Government Camp. It was well and thoughtfully equipped, particularly the kitchen. We are retired biologists, and I was with the USFWS for many years, so it was great to read the history of the cabin and Mr. Marshall who served early on with the Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies.

Its a nice, clean, roomy house - hardly a cabin at all. But if you are going in winter the walk is longer than the directions say. Be prepared.

This is most certainly a cabin for those who do not want to have close neighbors, in a relaxing environment.
The cabin has been updated and has practically everything you need.

There are a few things that future renters might want to be away of.

-The two bathrooms are on the "main floor" which is actually the second floor.
-There are stairs that you MUST climb to get into the cabin. In the fall they can be slippery. While there is a ground level back door, they owners do not appear to want you to use it. We did anyway because we have an older dog who could not climb slippery wooded stairs.
-While cute for kids, the third floor sleeping area seems unfinished and devoid of any warmth, literally.
-The cooktop has only two burners. One side is devoted to a griddle.
-The wood stove is a real heat source. We had to open windows to keep the temperature regulated. After the first lighting, we just didn't use it.
-The internet was good, there is no cable, but they do have Netflicks and if you have an account, Hulu is available.
    -The beds are comfortable.

I would not recommend bringing more than 6 people. You will not have any place to sit in the living room or the dining room.

All that aside, we will certainly rent this cabin again and do highly recommend it if you understand the above issues.

Our family absolutely loved staying in this cabin. It was well appointed and clean, plus the lay out worked well for our four children. The wood stove kept us warm and cozy but the stillness of being away from the hustle/bustle was just what we needed.
We are planning on coming back!

My family and I enjoyed ourselves from the beginning of the hike in from the parking lot through to the end of our stay. The check in process was easy. The instructions for the hike in were vague, and perhaps inaccurate, but none the less we found the cabin without much difficulty. The cabin was comfortable, well equipped, and very cozy. We had very positive experience and plan on repeating this trip in the future. Perhaps a new family tradition was started.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Marshall cabin. The walk in was fantastic in the fading light, and the cabin was spotless. The seating was cozy for ten people, and the whole cabin was very well stocked. We spent the whole trip exploring the nearby area and enjoying watching the snow fall while listening to the fire crackle in the fireplace. It was a pleasure to rent from All Seasons Rentals and I would do it again.
